Just north of the border, fifty-one miles southwest of Tucson, in its own mesquite covered valley where mountains and open desert meet, lies the Elkhorn ranch. Here, since 1945, the Miller family has developed a ranch with exceptional riding and comfortable living for thirty-two guests. Riding is the main interest. There are gentle or loping rides through the desert and more vigorous trips along the many mountain trails. All day rides with sandwiches or a mule-packed box lunch give the chance to explore further into the country. The ranch’s 10,000 acres offer an unlimited area of canyons and mountain passes. Rides are kept small so that each guest may have the length and pace of ride most enjoyed each day. The seventy head of horses vary in type to suit any rider and the right horse remains with each person throughout the visit.

Enjoy wildlife and wintering birds, lazy hours in the sun, tennis, swimming, and shuffleboard. Accommodations are comfortable, many with fireplaces, all with electric heat and private bath. The food is plentiful and good, whether in the dining room, on the patio or along the trail.

Open: Mid-November through April.

Elkhorn Ranch cabins provide comfortable living space for singles, couples or families. Cabins are equipped with private baths, electric heat and good reading lights. Some have separate sitting rooms or fireplaces — no televisions nor phones in the rooms. All cabins are within a few minutes walk of the dining room, ranch office and barn, yet desert landscaping provides a feeling of privacy and seclusion.

Western style horseback rides venture into remote canyons and mountains of the Baboquivari Mountains – a true wilderness experience.  Loping rides explore the open ranching country of the Altar Valley.  Small guided rides are arranged daily to suit riders’ interests and skills.  Kids must be 6 to ride and many Elkhorn guests ride well into their elder years.  The combination of small rides, ranch raised horses and diverse country creates opportunity for riders of all skill levels.

Riding is the primary organized activity. Many guests enjoy relaxed walks or vigorous hikes amidst the curious Sonoran desert landscape. Kids love the freedom of ranch life plus the heated pool, tennis / basketball court, ping-pong, shuffleboard and game cupboard — parents appreciate the absence of TV and well stocked library. Bring your camera and binoculars to enjoy the colorful wintering birds. The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum is the Miller family’s favorite day trip.
